In short: West Bengal is more than a modern Indian state; it is a region with human roots stretching back 42,000 years. From the rise of ancient empires and colonial trading posts to the world's longest-serving democratically elected communist government, its history is a tapestry of profound political and cultural transformation.

The story of West Bengal begins deep in prehistory, with human settlements identified in the Ayodhya Hills dating back 42,000 years. By 2,000 BCE, settled life had expanded into the Damodar-Ajay River Valley, flourishing alongside the Harappan civilization. Over subsequent centuries, the region was integrated into powerful empires, including the Mauryan under Ashoka and later the Gupta, Pala, and Sena dynasties, which established Bengal as a distinct political and cultural entity.

The region's colonial history was marked by a diverse European presence. While the British East India Company eventually secured control in 1765, other powers held strategic posts: the Portuguese in Hooghly until 1632, the Dutch in Hooghly-Chinsura until 1825, the Danish in Shrirampur until 1845, and the French in Chandernagore until 1949. This era of British dominance, centered in Calcutta, saw the province become the administrative heart of British India before the 1905 partition fractured the region along communal lines.

The 20th century brought seismic shifts. The 1947 partition created the state of West Bengal, which faced the immense challenge of absorbing over seven million refugees from East Pakistan. Political life remained volatile, leading to the 1967 peasant uprisings and the rise of the Naxalite movement. In 1977, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) began a 34-year tenure, only to be unseated in 2011 by the All India Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee, the state's first female chief minister.
