How a 1908 FA Cup defeat saved Woking F.C. from total financial collapse
In short: Founded in 1887, Woking F.C. has navigated over a century of near-misses and dramatic turnarounds. From the brink of folding in 1908 to a golden era of FA Trophy dominance in the 1990s, the Cardinals have remained a resilient fixture of English non-league football despite constant financial and managerial volatility.
Woking F.C., based in Surrey, has experienced a turbulent history since its formation in 1887. Within two decades, the club faced an existential threat due to financial instability. A pivotal moment occurred in January 1908 when the team reached the first round of the FA Cup to face Bolton Wanderers. Although Woking lost 5–0, the national attention generated by the tie led Bolton to visit for a friendly match the following season, providing the necessary revenue to keep the club solvent.
The 1990s marked the club's most successful period, defined by three FA Trophy victories in 1994, 1995, and 1997. Under manager Geoff Chapple, Woking became a formidable force in the Conference, achieving five consecutive top-five finishes. This era also saw the club gain prominence in the FA Cup, including a notable 4–2 victory over West Bromwich Albion in 1991 and a narrow 1–0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park. These successes established the club as a significant name in non-league football.
Financial challenges have remained a recurring theme. In 2002, local businessman Chris Ingram intervened to save the club from administration. More recently, in July 2024, the club faced potential administration again, with owner Drew Volpe willing to sell for £1. By December 2024, American businessman Todd Johnson’s Cardinal Football Group completed a takeover. Throughout these shifts, the club has maintained its home at Kingfield Stadium—now the Laithwaite Community Stadium—and continues to compete in the National League, the fifth tier of the English football system.
