The origins of the film Hypnotic trace back much further than its May 12, 2023, release. Director Robert Rodriguez originally wrote the initial screenplay in 2002, describing it as one of his favorite stories. The project underwent significant development over two decades, with Max Borenstein later rewriting the script for Studio 8. By 2019, the production landscape was taking shape with plans for co-production between Studio 8 and Solstice Studios.
The film's narrative centers on Detective Danny Rourke, played by Ben Affleck, who finds himself trapped in a 'construct'—a manufactured reality designed by a secretive government agency known as the Division. The plot follows Rourke as he navigates a world of 'Hypnotics,' powerful individuals capable of mind control. As the story unfolds, it is revealed that Rourke's very identity and memories may be fabrications, and that the weapon the Division seeks, known as 'Domino,' is actually his daughter, Minnie.
Production was a notable family affair for Rodriguez. Beyond directing, he served as producer, cinematographer, and editor. His creative team included his son Rebel Rodriguez as composer, his son Racer Max as producer, and his daughter Rhiannon providing storyboards. This collaborative effort culminated in filming in Austin, Texas, between September and November 2021. While critics offered mixed reviews—with some comparing its psychological twists to the works of Philip K. Dick—the film's global reach saw it gross a worldwide total of approximately $16.3 million.
