In short: Hwang Hee-chan is known in his home country as "Hwangso," the Korean word for bull. This nickname reflects a playing style defined by aggression and relentless energy—traits that propelled him from a record-breaking youth prospect to a key figure in some of Europe's most prestigious footballing arenas.

Hwang’s trajectory began with historic dominance in South Korean youth football. By 2008, he had already secured the top goalscoring titles in both the Hwarangdaegi Tournament and Dongwon Youth Cup. His prolific nature continued into the Kanga Cup, where he set a tournament record by scoring 22 goals. These achievements earned him the prestigious Cha Bum-kun Football Award, recognizing him as one of the nation's premier young talents.

His professional path took a distinct turn in December 2014 when he chose to sign with Red Bull Salzburg over staying with Pohang Steelers as a homegrown player. This move placed him in a high-performance system where he eventually joined forces with stars like Erling Haaland and Takumi Minamino during the 2019–20 season. During that campaign, Hwang was lauded for his dribbling and passing, contributing to eight goals (including three goals and three assists) in the Champions League.

Hwang's international career is marked by high-stakes moments, most notably scoring the stoppage-time winning goal against Portugal during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Beyond individual glory, his participation in the 2018 Asian Games provided a unique life milestone: winning the gold medal against Japan guaranteed him and his teammates an exemption from mandatory military service. He continues to be a mainstay for South Korea, recently being named to the IFFHS Asian Men's Team of the Year for three consecutive years (2022–2024).

Despite his success, Hwang has faced modern challenges off the pitch. In July 2024, he was subjected to a racist remark during a friendly match with Como 1907, where he was compared to actor Jackie Chan—a reference to Asian stereotypes. While the club defended the comment as non-racist, the incident highlighted the ongoing scrutiny and prejudice faced by high-profile Asian athletes in European sports.
