The 'Crown Prince' who navigated a record-breaking home run
In short: Hwang In-beom’s career is a masterclass in navigating geopolitical shifts and club disputes. From becoming the youngest scorer in Daejeon history to playing for clubs across four different countries, he has balanced individual accolades with high-stakes team records.
Hwang's rise began in 2015 with Daejeon Citizen, where he became the club's youngest goalscorer on May 30. His trajectory was defined by rapid international movement: he moved to Vancouver Whitecaps FC in early 2019, then to Rubin Kazan in Russia. However, his career faced a unique geopolitical hurdle in April 2022 when FIFA regulations regarding the invasion of Ukraine allowed him to suspend his Russian contract and join FC Seoul.
His tenure in Europe highlights both peak success and legal friction. At Olympiacos, he was named Player of the Season by fans for the 2022–23 period but became embroiled in a potential court fight over contract length—Hwang claimed a one-year deal with options, while the club insisted on three years. He later moved to Red Star Belgrade for a record €5 million fee, where he contributed to a world-record 122-game unbeaten home run streak in the Serbian SuperLiga.
On the international stage, Hwang has been a versatile asset under various managers. Known as 'Bento's crown prince,' he was a key figure for Paulo Bento, helping South Korea win the 2018 Asian Games and earning MVP honors at the 2019 EAFF Championship. While his 2023 AFC Asian Cup campaign saw mixed reviews due to high-pressure mistakes, he reclaimed his status as an elite playmaker in the 2026 World Cup opener against the Czech Republic, where he was named Player of the Match.
