A cinematic tribute to a father's legacy and the cost of hesitation
In short: What if your inability to speak your truth cost you a lifetime of happiness? The 2026 Tamil film Idhayam Murali explores this through a protagonist who repeatedly loses love simply because he cannot find the courage to confess his feelings.
Directed by debutant Aakash Baskaran under Dawn Pictures, Idhayam Murali is a coming-of-age romantic drama that serves as a tribute to the actor Murali, who starred in the 1991 film Idhayam. The film's narrative follows Idhaya, a man whose life is defined by missed opportunities and unconfessed affection. From his first crush on his teacher, Geetha, to his complicated relationship with twins Samantha and Samyuktha, and his later connection with a doctor named Amudha, Idhaya's journey is one of persistent hesitation.
The plot reaches a peak of tension during a wedding in India, where Idhaya's indecision leads to a comic twist involving his twin-related confusion. The film's resolution takes a surreal turn, ending with a humorous scene where a spacecraft call is cut off just before a long-awaited confession can be made. This unconventional ending highlights the film's blend of romance and comedy, even as critics offered mixed reviews upon its July 10, 2026, release.
Critical reception was varied. While some critics, like Bhuvanesh Chandar of The Hindu, felt the film lacked the emotional depth to make its themes of unrequited love linger, others found it to be a breezy, nostalgic watch. Janani K. of India Today praised Manoj Paramahamsa's cinematography but noted that the film struggled when it moved away from its lighter, more playful elements. Despite a legal challenge from director Sudha Kongara regarding unpaid dues from a previous project, the film proceeded to its scheduled theatrical release.
