How a Bronx-born rapper redefined hip-hop history with her debut studio album
In short: In 2018, Cardi B released Invasion of Privacy, a record that shattered industry norms and cemented her status as a cultural force. By becoming the first solo female rapper to win a Grammy for best rap album, she transformed from a social media sensation into a definitive voice of her generation.
Born Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar in the Bronx, Cardi B navigated a path from reality television stardom to musical dominance. After gaining attention for her candid social media presence and a stint on Love & Hip Hop: New York, she signed with Atlantic Records in 2017. Her debut single, the summer anthem Bodak Yellow, signaled her arrival, making her the first woman to land her first three releases in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.
Invasion of Privacy arrived in 2018, blending hip-hop with trap and R&B elements. The album’s success was immediate and historic. With the hit I Like It reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100, Cardi B became the first female rapper to secure two chart-topping singles. The project earned five nominations at the 2019 Grammy Awards, ultimately winning for best rap album—a milestone that marked the first time a solo female artist received the honor.
Beyond the accolades, the album served as a platform for Cardi B to address her personal journey, from her early life in New York to the complexities of fame. Her influence continued to grow with subsequent hits like WAP, which set records for opening-week streams. Even as she navigated personal challenges, including a high-profile divorce and legal battles, her impact on the music industry remained undeniable, setting a high bar for female rappers in the 21st century.
