How Cardi B rewrote the record books for female rappers
In short: From VH1 reality TV to dominating the Billboard charts, Cardi B has achieved unprecedented milestones. She is the first female rapper to secure multiple number one singles and the only one to top the charts with multiple solo songs, fundamentally altering the landscape of modern hip-hop success.
Cardi B's ascent began in 2015 following appearances on VH1's Love & Hip Hop: New York. After building an internet fan base, she released her first mixtape, Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 1, on March 7, 2016. By February 2017, she had signed her first solo major label contract with Atlantic Records, a move that catalyzed her transition from reality star to a global musical powerhouse.
Her breakthrough single, "Bodak Yellow," became a massive crossover hit. On October 1, 2017, her ascent to the US Billboard Hot 100 top spot marked the first time a solo female rapper achieved this since Lauryn Hill in 1998. This momentum continued with her debut studio album, Invasion of Privacy, released on April 6, 2018. The Recording Academy noted that the album led the US Billboard 200 and stood as the decade's best-selling female rap record during the 2010s.
The scale of her commercial impact is significant. With 100 million equivalent units sold in the US via albums, singles, and mixtapes, the RIAA ranks her as the country's 6th best-selling female digital artist. She also set unprecedented certification records: no other female artist has had every album track reach gold or above via the RIAA, nor has any artist achieved platinum or higher for every song.
Her chart dominance spans decades. Additionally, her fifth chart-topping hit, "Up", ensured she remained the sole female rapper with several solo number one singles.
