From a 5–16 debut to redefining the limits of college basketball
In short: In 1974, the Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball program began with a modest 5–16 record. By the 2020s, the initiative transformed into a societal sensation, creating the highest-scoring player in NCAA Division I history while simultaneously breaking previous spectator figures.
The program's trajectory shifted dramatically in 1983 with the arrival of C. Vivian Stringer. She revolutionized the team's competitive identity, leading Iowa to six Big Ten regular-season titles and its first Final Four appearance in 1993. During her 12-season tenure, she amassed a 269–84 overall record, establishing a foundation of institutional support and community interest that paved the way for future success.
Lisa Bluder took the helm in 2000 and became the program's most enduring figure, securing 528 wins over 24 seasons. Her era was defined by consistency, including 22 postseason appearances and five Big Ten Tournament titles. A notable highlight of her tenure was the 2018–19 season, where star Megan Gustafson led the team to the Elite Eight, eventually leading to the retirement of her No. 10 jersey in 2020.
The 2020 recruitment of Caitlin Clark ushered in a period of unprecedented cultural resonance. Her impact, often cited as the 'Caitlin Clark effect,' significantly boosted the popularity of women's basketball both in college and the WNBA.
The Hawkeyes reached the Final Four in 2023 and 2024, with Clark scoring 41 points in both championship appearances. By the end of the 2023–24 season, the program achieved its first No. 1 seed since 1992. Following her historic run, Iowa officially retired Clark's No. 22 jersey on February 2, 2025, making it only the third jersey retired in the program's history.
