From Wisconsin high school scoring records to WNBA championship glory
In short: Megan DiLeo's path to the WNBA was defined by a singular, dominant scoring record in Wisconsin. Her journey from a high school standout to a key defensive stopper in a championship-winning moment illustrates the grueling transition from collegiate stardom to professional success in elite basketball.
A Port Wing, Wisconsin native, DiLeo earned her reputation by becoming the highest-scoring player in the history of Wisconsin High School Girls Basketball. This early dominance translated to the collegiate level at the University of Iowa. During her senior year in 2019, she scored 1,000 points and was named the nation's top female basketball player, earning the Honda Sports Award and being named the national player of the year by ESPN. Her professional entry was not immediate. Despite being drafted 17th overall by the Dallas Wings in 2019, she was released before the season began and had to be re-signed in June of that year. She spent the following years finding her footing, notably with the Washington Mystics in 2021 and the Phoenix Mercury in 2022.
It was with the Mercury that she became a regular contributor, recording her first double-double against the Las Vegas Aces and appearing in her first career playoffs. DiLeo reached a career pinnacle in 2024 and 2025. After an injury sidelined her for the first half of the 2024 WNBA season, she joined the Las Vegas Aces. She played a pivotal role in their 2025 WNBA Finals championship run. In a high-stakes Game 3, with the score tied at 88-88 and only 20 seconds remaining, DiLeo recorded a defensive stop—a partial block and rebound—that set up a game-winning shot. She subsequently signed a two-year deal with the expansion Portland Fire in 2026 to join their inaugural roster.
