From church league to the NBA: the rapid ascent of Isaac Okoro
In short: Before becoming a professional for the Chicago Bulls, Isaac Okoro was honing his skills in a local church league. His journey from a high school standout in Georgia to a top-five NBA draft pick is a testament to the intense development pipelines of modern American basketball.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Nigerian parents, Okoro's basketball trajectory was shaped by early specialized training. Around age seven or eight, he began working with AAU coach Omar Cooper, whose son, Sharife Cooper, would later become his teammate in high school. This foundation led him to McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Georgia, where he achieved unprecedented success. He initially developed his game playing for the A.O.T. Running Rebels on the Nike EYBL circuit. This early exposure to elite competition helped solidify his reputation as a premier prospect.
During his senior year, Okoro led McEachern to a 32–0 regular season record, the first undefeated season in the highest Georgia classification since 1995. His performance earned him a spot in the Nike Hoop Summit on April 12, 2019, and he became only the second player in school history to have his jersey retired on April 26, 2019. During this period, he shared the state most valuable player award with his teammate, Sharife Cooper. He guided his squad to victories in both the Tournament of Champions and the City of Palms Classic.
After a standout freshman season at Auburn, where he earned All-SEC Second Team honors, Okoro entered the 2020 NBA draft. He was selected fifth overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Following his tenure in Cleveland, which included a career-high 32 points against the Phoenix Suns on May 4, 2021, he was traded to the Chicago Bulls on July 6, 2025, in a deal involving Lonzo Ball. His professional career saw him make his debut in December 2020 against the Charlotte Hornets. He also achieved a notable victory against the Brooklyn Nets in March 2023 by hitting a decisive three-pointer.
Okoro's physical profile stands at 6 feet 4 inches and 225 pounds, primarily playing the small forward position. His professional trajectory was shaped by elite recruitment, earning five-star status from Rivals and four-star ratings from both ESPN and 247Sports. His collegiate success was further highlighted by being named to the SEC All-Freshman and All-Defensive teams. He also represented the United States at the 2018 FIBA Under-17 World Cup, where he helped secure a gold medal.
