From seminary student to NBA champion: the unlikely ascent of Pascal Siakam
In short: Before he was an NBA All-Star, Pascal Siakam was training for the priesthood in Cameroon. With almost no prior basketball experience, his journey from a religious seminary to the pinnacle of professional sports is a remarkable testament to raw athleticism and sudden opportunity.
Born in Douala, Cameroon, Siakam’s early life was far removed from the bright lights of the NBA. At age 11, his father, Tchamo—a local transit worker and mayor of Makénéné—enrolled him in St. Andrew's Seminary in Bafia to embody the family's Catholic faith. By age 15, however, Siakam had decided against a life in the priesthood.
His path to basketball was serendipitous. Unlike his older brothers, who were all recruited to NCAA Division I colleges, Siakam had little initial interest in the sport. He was discovered at a local camp by Luc Mbah a Mute, a mentor who helped facilitate his move to the United States at 18. When Siakam attended the Basketball Without Borders camp, he possessed virtually no formal experience, yet his high energy and athleticism immediately caught the eye of scouts, including Raptors president Masai Ujiri.
The transition from the court to the pros was meteoric. After a standout collegiate career at New Mexico State, where he was the 2016 WAC Player of the Year, he was selected 27th overall in the 2016 NBA draft. He quickly became a history-maker, becoming the first player to win both the NBA Most Improved Player award and an NBA title in the same season (2019).
Siakam's career is defined by rapid evolution, from a G League champion and Finals MVP in 2017 to a cornerstone of the Toronto Raptors' 2019 championship run. His ability to adapt—improving his three-point shooting by 36% in a single season—has seen him earn four All-Star appearances and multiple All-NBA selections.
