The remarkable ascent of NBA standout Onyeka Okongwu
In short: From a high school phenom playing alongside the Ball brothers to a cornerstone of the Atlanta Hawks, Onyeka Okongwu’s journey is defined by elite production and a profound personal tribute. His career reflects both incredible athletic dominance and a deep emotional connection to his late brother, Nnamdi.
Born in Los Angeles on December 11, 2000, to Nigerian immigrants, Okongwu’s path to the NBA was forged in the competitive landscape of California high school basketball. During his freshman year at Chino Hills, he shared the court with Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo Ball, contributing to an undefeated 35–0 season and a state title. His individual dominance was immediate; he earned MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year honors alongside LaMelo Ball and eventually became just the fifth player to win back-to-back California Mr. Basketball titles.
After committing to USC in 2018, Okongwu’s collegiate career was nothing short of explosive. In his debut against Florida A&M, he recorded eight blocks, a school record. During his lone year with USC, he achieved first-team All-Pac-12 status, posting averages of 8.6 rebounds, 16.2 points, and 2.7 blocks each game. Despite the 2020 pandemic canceling the NCAA tournament, his talent was undeniable, leading the Atlanta Hawks to select him sixth overall in the 2020 NBA draft.
Beyond the statistics, Okongwu’s game carries deep emotional weight. He wears the number 17 in memory of his brother, Nnamdi, who passed away in 2014 following a skateboarding accident. The number 17 represents the age Nnamdi was when he died. Such tenacity led to landmark NBA feats, including a 2025 outing where he, alongside James Harden and LeBron James, became one of merely three athletes to post 8 three-pointers, 30 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals in one contest.
