In short: Formed in 1949, this highly classified Israeli naval force specializes in complex sea-to-land incursions and counter-terrorism. Often likened to the United States Navy SEALs or the British Special Boat Service, these commandos undergo rigorous, multi-year training to execute high-stakes missions ranging from sabotage and intelligence gathering to maritime hostage rescue.

Established by Yohai Ben-Nun, Shayetet 13 emerged from the ranks of the Palyam, the naval arm of the pre-state Haganah. Initially, the unit’s existence was a closely guarded state secret, with members wearing standard navy insignia to avoid detection. It was not until 1960 that the Israeli government officially acknowledged the unit, allowing its operatives to display their distinctive bat emblem publicly.

The unit’s operational history is extensive, spanning decades of regional conflict. In the late 1960s, it conducted daring raids during the War of Attrition, including the 1969 Green Island operation. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the commandos were heavily involved in the Lebanon conflict, though they faced significant setbacks, most notably a 1997 ambush near Sidon that resulted in the deaths of 11 operatives. Despite these challenges, the unit remained central to Israeli security, evolving to address modern threats like arms smuggling and maritime blockades.

Beyond combat, Shayetet 13 has played a vital role in humanitarian and clandestine rescue efforts. In the 1980s, they assisted in Operation Moses, ferrying Ethiopian Jews to safety from the Sudanese coast. More recently, the unit has been instrumental in counter-terrorism operations, including the 2002 and 2003 Chief-of-Staff citations for their work. During the 2023 conflict, the unit was deployed to recapture military outposts and infrastructure in southern Israel and Gaza, demonstrating its enduring capacity for high-intensity, multi-domain warfare.
