Can a simple rule of helping three people change a community?
In short: In the 2014 action drama Jai Ho, a suspended military major introduces a radical social experiment. His concept is simple: every citizen must help three people, who in turn help three more. This ripple effect aims to foster kindness, but the mission quickly spirals into a violent confrontation with corruption.
Directed by Sohail Khan, the film is an official remake of the Telugu-language film Stalin. It was originally conceived under the title Mental before being re-titled for its January 24, 2014, release during the Republic Day weekend. The narrative follows Jai Agnihotri, a short-tempered INA Major who, after being suspended for rescuing children from terrorists, adopts a 'help-three-people' philosophy following a personal tragedy involving a young girl named Suman.
While the film achieved significant commercial success—grossing ₹195 crore (approximately US$20 million) and becoming the sixth highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2014—critical reception was deeply divided. Some critics, such as Taran Adarsh, praised its noble message, awarding it 4.5 out of 5 stars. Conversely, others were less kind; Anupama Chopra described it as 'more of a cartoon than a film,' and Rajeev Masand noted an 'unpleasant aftertaste' from the film's manipulative nature.
The production was a massive undertaking, with total costs including marketing and prints reaching roughly ₹650 million ($9.6 million), though this figure excludes Salman Khan's specific remuneration. The film's marketing was equally notable, featuring a first-look poster designed by fans that digitally merged thousands of their images into a single portrait of Khan. Despite facing challenges from piracy on platforms like YouTube, the film's reach was vast, playing on approximately 3,900 screens in India and 650 screens overseas.
