The defensive specialist who forced a quarterback into negative yardage
In short: In professional football, ending a game with your opponent losing ground is a rare feat of dominance. Jaire Alexander achieved this in 2021, becoming the only cornerback since 2006 to accomplish such a milestone during an NFL playoff game.
Jaire Alexander's journey to the NFL began at Rocky River High School before he committed to the University of Louisville. During his collegiate career from 2015 to 2017, he recorded 77 tackles and seven interceptions. Despite suffering persistent injuries that forced him to skip the 2017 TaxSlayer Bowl, Alexander's performance at the NFL Scouting Combine solidified his status as a premier prospect, leading the Green Bay Packers to trade multiple draft picks to secure him with the 18th overall pick in 2018.
Alexander quickly ascended within the Packers' defense. After starting his rookie season and earning a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team, he became a cornerstone of the secondary. His breakout year came in 2020, where he earned a second-team All-Pro selection and a Pro Bowl invitation. That season, he was ranked first among all qualifying cornerbacks by Pro Football Focus with an overall grade of 90.5, showcasing his ability to impact the game through both individual plays—like his first career safety against the Vikings—and consistent team success.
His career has been defined by high-stakes reliability and physical resilience. In 2021, he demonstrated elite playmaking by recording two interceptions off Tom Brady in a single game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Despite facing significant health hurdles, including a shoulder injury that led to an injured reserve stint and various concussion protocols, Alexander remained a primary asset. His value was cemented in May 2022 when the Packers signed him to a massive four-year, $84 million contract extension, securing his role as a premier defender through the 2026 season.
Alexander's career trajectory highlights the evolution of a modern cornerback: from a high-pedigree draft pick navigating early depth charts to an All-Pro mainstay. His ability to influence field position and pressure quarterbacks has made him one of the most technically proficient and physically durable defenders in recent NFL history.
