The basketball dynasty of Jaime Jaquez Jr. and the UCLA legacy
In short: Born into a family of collegiate athletes, Jaime Jaquez Jr. transformed from a high school standout into an NBA force. From his record-breaking years at UCLA to his rapid ascent with the Miami Heat, his journey is defined by resilience against injury and a relentless scoring instinct.
Jaquez's basketball pedigree is deeply rooted. He is the third generation of his family to play college basketball; his parents, Angela and Jaime Sr., both competed for Concordia University Irvine, while his paternal grandfather, Ezequiel, played for Ventura College and Northern Arizona University. This athletic foundation supported his rise at Adolfo Camarillo High School, where he scored 2,653 points and once set a school record with a 54-point game.
His collegiate career at UCLA was marked by both brilliance and physical struggle. During his senior season in 2023, he was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year and a consensus second-team All-American, averaging 31.7 points and 11.7 rebounds. However, his path was not without setbacks; he underwent surgery in April 2022 to remove bone spurs from his right ankle following a season plagued by synovitis and injuries.
In the NBA, Jaquez quickly established himself as a premier talent. Drafted 18th overall by the Miami Heat in 2023, he earned consecutive Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month awards in October/November 2023 and December 2023. His influence persisted during the 2025–26 campaign; after scoring 1,138 points off the bench to top the NBA, he moved to the Milwaukee Bucks in July 2026 via a major trade.
Beyond the court, Jaquez carries a diverse heritage, being of Mexican descent through his father and Norwegian descent through his mother. This dual identity is reflected in his nickname, 'Juan Wick,' a nod to his Mexican roots and his perceived resemblance to the cinematic character John Wick.
