In short: After representing England at various youth levels, James Morrison made a pivotal choice to represent Scotland. This decision defined a career that saw him transition from a promising Middlesbrough academy product to a decorated midfielder and, eventually, a successful head coach at West Bromwich Albion.

Born in Darlington in 1986, Morrison's professional journey began in the Middlesbrough youth academy. He was a standout performer in their 2003–04 FA Youth Cup winning side, notably scoring in the first leg of the final against Aston Villa. His transition to senior football was swift, making his debut for Middlesbrough in January 2004 and appearing in the 2006 UEFA Cup Final against Sevilla. His first-team debut arrived in an FA Cup match against Notts County. He later made his Premiership debut during a heavy defeat to Portsmouth.

A defining moment in his career occurred in 2007 when he chose to represent Scotland via his grandparents, rather than pursuing limited opportunities with England. He went on to earn 46 full international caps for Scotland between 2008 and 2017, scoring against Wales in 2011 and England in 2013. His time at West Bromwich Albion, which began with a £1.5 million transfer in 2007, cemented his status as one of the club's greatest midfielders.

Morrison's longevity at West Bromwich Albion spanned from 2007 until 2019. During this tenure, he achieved significant individual recognition, including winning the club's Supporters Player of the Year in 2014–15. After retiring from professional play in October 2019, he transitioned into coaching, eventually returning to West Bromwich Albion as head coach in 2026 following a successful period as caretaker and interim manager. He also secured the club's Goal of the Season award in 2007. His coaching career included a stint with the Scotland national team staff.
