From childhood film productions to becoming a Sunday Times bestselling novelist
In short: Long before he was a household name on TruTV, James Murray was convincing his parents to fund his cinematic ambitions. Today, the improvisational comedian has transitioned from sketch comedy to becoming a successful author of sci-fi and horror, proving that his creative reach extends far beyond hidden camera pranks.
James Stephen Murray arrived in Staten Island, New York, on May 1, 1976, starting his journey toward fame through unusual initial projects. In 1998, he produced, wrote, and directed a film titled Damned!, which offered an alternate retelling of the Bible. The project was so ambitious that his parents paid for the production instead of buying a Ford Taurus. This early cinematic venture was a significant departure from his later television work. He was raised in the same Staten Island borough where his journey began.
Murray's professional comedy career is deeply rooted in his lifelong friendships. While attending Monsignor Farrell High School as freshmen, he befriended Joe Gatto, Brian Quinn, and Sal Vulcano; they finished school in 1994 and later reunited. The comedy team known as The Tenderloins started touring in 1999 and secured a $100,000 top prize on NBC's It's Your Show in 2007 for 'Time Thugs'.
The group achieved massive television success with Impractical Jokers, which premiered on TruTV in December 2011 and drew over 32 million viewers in its first season. While the show remains a cornerstone of his career, Murray has also established himself as a prolific author. His 2018 sci-fi/horror novel, Awakened, co-written with Darren Wearmouth, reached #1 on the Sunday Times Best Seller list. He has since continued this literary momentum with various thrillers and the Area 51 Interns series, demonstrating a versatile creative range that spans from sketch comedy to bestselling fiction. His literary output includes the thriller The Stowaway and the middle-grade series Area 51 Interns. Additionally, his latest work, You Better Watch Out, follows characters being pursued by a killer.
