In short: Born into a family of professional wrestlers, James Laurinaitis was a standout athlete in both hockey and football. While he was once a potential NHL draft pick, he ultimately forged a legendary career as one of the most decorated linebackers in college and professional football history.

James Laurinaitim's athletic pedigree is rooted in a family of professional wrestlers. His father, Joe, is the WWE Hall of Famer known as Road Warrior Animal, and his uncles, John and Marcus, also competed professionally. This competitive drive translated to the ice and the field; as a senior at Wayzata High School, Laurinaitis served as captain of his hockey team and was considered a potential second or third-round NHL draft pick. However, scouts believed his future lay in football. His high school football years in Minnesota were equally impressive, earning him the Defensive Mr. Football title in 2004. That specific season, he recorded 193 tackles, including 28 tackles for loss and five sacks.

His collegiate career at Ohio State University (2005–2008) was nothing short of historic. Playing under coach Jim Tressel, Laurinaitis became a three-time consensus All-American. His defensive dominance earned him the 2006 Nagurski Award and the 2007 Butkus Award. As the sole recipient of two Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year titles, he also reached the final stages for various top accolades, such as the Lott and Lombardi Trophies. His impact on the Buckeyes' defense was immense, notably leading the team in both interceptions and tackles during the 2006 regular season. He became only the fourth individual in the programme's past to top the team's tackle count during three different seasons.

In the NFL, Laurinaitis was a cornerstone for the St. Louis Rams, where he played from 2009 to 2016. During his seven seasons with the franchise, he was remarkably consistent, starting every single regular-season game. He finished his Rams tenure with 852 combined tackles and 10 interceptions. After stints with the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons, he retired in 2017. Today, he has returned to his roots, serving as the linebackers coach at Ohio State. The Rams initially selected him in the second round of the 2009 NFL draft, specifically with the 35th overall pick. He eventually signed a massive five-year, $42.12 million contract extension with the team in 2012.
