In short: Before he became a staple of British television as a hard-man antagonist, Billy Murray was a dock worker with an unlikely benefactor. The Kray twins, impressed by his attitude, paid for his drama school tuition. That early investment launched a career spanning iconic soap roles and global gaming fame.

Born in Forest Gate, London, in 1941, William Albert Murray grew up in a household shaped by his father, a plasterer and boxing champion. Murray’s early life was far from the stage; he worked as a shelf-stacker and cleaned oil tankers at the local docks. His connection to the notorious Kray twins, Reggie and Ronnie, was formative. He boxed at their club and became close enough to join them on holiday in Spain. Recognizing his potential, the twins paid £400 for his enrollment at the East 15 Acting School, a debt they never asked him to repay.

Murray’s professional acting career began with minor roles in the 1960s, including 1963's The Wrong Arm of the Law. He spent decades in television staples like The Sweeney and Minder before landing his breakout role as DS Don Beech in the ITV drama The Bill in 1995. His reputation for playing tough characters solidified when he joined EastEnders in 2005 as the villainous Johnny Allen. This performance, which saw him terrorize the show's central families, earned him the 'Best Villain' award at the 2006 British Soap Awards.

Beyond the screen, Murray’s career expanded into the digital realm as the voice of Captain John Price in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare trilogy between 2007 and 2011. His personal life has been marked by public legal challenges, including being cleared of assault charges in 1998 and 2011. Today, Murray balances his film work, such as the Rise of the Footsoldier series, with property investment in east London. His daughter, Jaime Murray, has also established a successful acting career, appearing in series like Hustle and Dexter.
