Jana Novotná: The Serve-and-Volley Master Who Conquered Her Greatest Heartbreak
In short: Jana Novotná was a rare breed in modern tennis, wielding a serve-and-volley style that defied the baseline-heavy trends of her era. After a devastating collapse in a major final left her in tears before royalty, she fought back to claim her place among the sport's all-time greats.
Born in 1968, the Czech athlete turned professional in 1987 and became a dominant force in doubles, eventually holding the world number one ranking for 67 weeks. Her singles career was defined by persistence. In 1993, she reached the Wimbledon final against Steffi Graf. Leading 4-1 in the deciding set, Novotná lost her composure, double-faulted, and surrendered the title. The image of her weeping on the shoulder of the Duchess of Kent became an iconic moment in sports history, symbolizing the crushing pressure of elite competition.
Novotná refused to let that defeat define her. She continued to refine her game under the guidance of coach Hana Mandlíková, who worked with her for nine years. Her breakthrough finally arrived at the 1998 Wimbledon Championships. By defeating Nathalie Tauziat in the final, she became the oldest woman in the Open Era to win her first Grand Slam singles title at 29 years and nine months old. This victory was part of a prolific career that included 24 singles titles and a double career Grand Slam in doubles.
Beyond the court, Novotná was a trailblazer who reached over $10 million in prize money by 1998 and secured more than 500 singles match wins. Her contributions to the sport were recognized in 2005 when she was enshrined in the International Tennis Hall of Fame. After retiring in 1999, she remained active as a coach and commentator. She passed away in 2017 at age 49, having kept her battle with cancer private until the end, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and technical mastery.
