How a mortal woman became the most powerful version of Thor
In short: For decades, Jane Foster was merely a supporting character in the epic of Thor. But a sudden loss of worthiness changed everything. Discover how a nurse facing a terminal diagnosis stepped into the mantle of a god, wielding Mjolnir with unprecedented skill and a heavy personal cost.
Introduced in September 1962 by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby, Jane Foster began her journey as a nurse to Dr. Donald Blake, the mortal host of Thor. While she spent years as a romantic interest, a pivotal shift occurred in October 2014. Following a secret revealed by Nick Fury that caused Thor to lose his ability to wield Mjolnir, an unidentified woman stepped forward to claim the hammer.
This new incarnation, written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by Russell Dauterman, was not a 'Lady Thor' or a 'She-Thor,' but simply Thor. This version of the character brought a unique mastery over the weapon; unlike predecessors like Beta Ray Bill, Foster could manipulate the hammer's trajectory and velocity mid-flight. However, this godhood came with a devastating biological price. The transformation process purged all toxins from her body, which effectively neutralized the chemotherapy she was undergoing for breast cancer.
The era of Jane Foster as Thor concluded in a monumental sacrifice. To defeat the monster Mangog, she used the chain Gleipnir to bind the beast and Mjolnir together, hurling them both into the Sun. Though she died as a result of the enchantment wearing off, her heroism endured. Following the massacre of the Valkyrior during the 'War of the Realms,' Foster transitioned into a new role, taking up the mantle of Valkyrie and wielding the shape-shifting weapon Undrjarn the All-Weapon.
Critics and fans have lauded this era as a high point for the franchise. While some, like Thomas Bacon, noted the tragedy of her death, others like Rosie Knight described the character's evolution as a 'stroke of genius' that expanded the Marvel Universe's reach.
