The unseeded underdog who rewrote the Wimbledon history books
In short: In 2023, Markéta Vondroušová achieved what no unseeded player had ever done before: winning the Wimbledon women's singles title. From a rapid breakthrough at age 17 to a historic Grand Slam victory, her career has been a whirlwind of elite achievements and unexpected setbacks.
Born in Sokolov in 1999, Vondroušová’s rise was marked by early versatility. Before focusing on tennis, she excelled in skiing, football, table tennis, and floorball. She possesses a notable sporting heritage; her great-grandfather, František Frk, won the 1935 Czechoslovak national pentathlon title. She transitioned to professional tennis with remarkable speed, winning her first WTA Tour title at the 2017 Ladies Open Biel Bienne at just 17 years old. Her father first introduced her to the sport when she was four. She also showed early promise by finishing third in a national mini-tennis tournament on Štvanice island.
Her career is defined by high-stakes breakthroughs and physical struggles. She became the first teenager to reach a French Open final since 2007, finishing as runner-up to Ashleigh Barty in 2019. That same year, she established herself as one of the tour's premier returners. Her success extended to the Olympic stage, where she secured a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She also achieved success in doubles, winning two major junior titles. This included a victory at the Orange Bowl alongside CiCi Bellis.
However, her trajectory has faced significant disruption. Throughout her career, she has battled various injuries, including a left wrist injury that required surgery in 2019. More recently, her career has been halted by a four-year ban for refusing a doping test in December 2025, a suspension that is scheduled to end in June 2030. In addition to her wrist issues, she has dealt with various other injuries throughout her professional career.
Despite these challenges, her technical skill remains a hallmark of her game. Famous for her trademark drop shot, she achieved a peak singles ranking of world No. 6, establishing herself among her generation's finest players. Her prowess on the court is further highlighted by her ability to lead the tour in return games won.
