In short: In 1990, the Boston Red Sox traded a rising star for a relief pitcher. They thought they were getting a bargain, but they actually handed the Houston Astros a Hall of Fame legend. This single transaction transformed a franchise and birthed the legendary 'Killer B's' era.

The trade, executed on August 30, 1990, is often cited as one of the most lopsided deals in professional sports. The Red Sox sought relief pitching and acquired Larry Andersen from the Houston Astros. While Andersen performed well, the Red Sox lost Bagwell, a move ESPN readers later labeled the second-worst trade in sports history, surpassed only by the sale of Babe Ruth to the Yankees.

Jeff Bagwell's ascent was meteoric. After being drafted by Boston in 1989, he was traded to Houston in 1990. Despite a lack of prior experience at first base, he jumped directly from Double-A to the majors in 1991, earning the National League Rookie of the Year award. His arrival signaled a golden era for the Astros, characterized by the 'Killer B's'—a trio including Bagwell, Craig Biggio, and Lance Berkman—who led the team to eleven first or second-place finishes in the NL Central between 1994 and 2005.

Bagwell's greatness was defined by a rare combination of power and discipline. He remains the only player in MLB history to record six consecutive seasons (1996–2001) with at least 30 home runs, 100 RBIs, 100 runs, and 100 walks. He is also one of only twelve players to achieve 400 home runs alongside a .400 on-base percentage. His unique physical approach—a low, wide crouch that resembled sitting on an invisible bench—helped shrink his strike zone and maximize his legendary power.

Despite his dominance, Bagwell's career was marked by physical resilience. He suffered three successive seasons interrupted by broken bones in his left hand, caused by pitches hitting him while he dipped during his swing. Nevertheless, his 449 home runs stand as the most in Houston franchise history, earning him induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2017.
