From elite high school prospect to professional journeyman, the career of Jeff Driskel
In short: Jeff Driskel was once the nation's top-ranked high school quarterback, a dual-threat prodigy who even caught the attention of Major League Baseball. Yet, his professional journey evolved into a nomadic odyssey across nearly a dozen NFL franchises, defined by resilience, position shifts, and the relentless pursuit of a starting role.
Born in 1993, Jeff Driskel emerged as a premier football talent in Oviedo, Florida. By 2010, he had secured top honors as a high school athlete, including being named the national player of the year by the Maxwell Football Club and the Gatorade Florida Player of the Year. His prowess was so evident that Rivals.com and Scout.com ranked him as the premier pro-style quarterback recruit in his class. Even baseball scouts took notice, with the Boston Red Sox selecting him in the 2013 MLB draft despite his lack of recent experience in the sport.
His collegiate career began at the University of Florida under coach Will Muschamp. After becoming the starter in 2012 and leading the Gators to the Sugar Bowl, his trajectory was interrupted by a broken fibula in 2013. Following a transfer to Louisiana Tech for his final season, he entered the NFL in 2016 as a sixth-round pick for the San Francisco 49ers. What followed was a decade-long tour through the league, including stints with the Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, Denver Broncos, and others.
Driskel’s professional tenure is marked by his adaptability. He has navigated injuries, COVID-19 protocols, and roster fluctuations, moving between active rosters and practice squads. In 2021, he even experimented with a transition to tight end while with the Houston Texans. Whether stepping in as a relief quarterback or serving as a strategic backup, his career reflects the volatile nature of professional football, where a player's value is often tested by their willingness to fill gaps across multiple organizations.
