From office assistant to Olympic gold: the ascent of Jennifer Dodds
In short: Before she was an Olympic champion, Jennifer Dodds worked as an office assistant. Her journey through the competitive world of Scottish curling is a masterclass in versatility, moving between elite teams and mastering both women's and mixed doubles disciplines.
Born on 1 October 1991, the Scottish curler's career is defined by her ability to adapt to different roles and teammates. She first gained international recognition as a second for the Hannah Fleming junior rink, earning silver at the 2013 World Junior Curling Championships and placing fourth at the 2013 Winter Universiade.
Dodds's path through the professional circuit involved several high-profile shifts. Between 2014 and 2016, she played third for Lauren Gray, securing a victory at the 2015 Dumfries Challenger Series. She later rejoined Fleming’s squad, helping them secure the 2018 Scottish Women's Curling Championship and earning the right to compete at the 2018 World Women's Curling Championship.
Her tenure with the Eve Muirhead rink brought both significant triumphs and challenges. During the 2018–19 season, Dodds even stepped up to skip the team while Muirhead recovered from a hip injury. The partnership saw success at the 2019 Cameron's Brewing Oakville Fall Classic and a silver medal at the 2019 European Curling Championships, as well as a 2020 Scottish title.
The pinnacle of her career arrived during the era of pandemic-related 'curling bubbles.' In 2021, alongside partner Bruce Mouat, she captured the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship gold after a dominant run that included an 8–1 round robin record. This period of excellence culminated in her being named an MBE in the 2022 Birthday Honours for her contributions to the sport.
