From Danish leagues to Ligue 1: the diverse career of Jens Berthel Askou
In short: A journey through professional football spans from the Danish Superliga to the Scottish Premiership. After a playing career that saw him navigate Turkish, English, and Danish leagues, Jens Berthel Askou has transitioned into a highly regarded manager, recently leading Motherwell to European qualification and securing a top-flight role in France.
Born in Videbæk on 19 August 1982, Jens Berthel Askou's footballing journey began in Denmark with Ikast FS and Holstebro. His professional ascent gained momentum in 2003 when a successful trial earned him a contract with 1st Division Silkeborg. During his four-year tenure, he helped the club secure promotion to the Danish Superliga, establishing himself as a regular starter.
Askou's career later took him abroad, first to the Turkish Süper Lig with Kasımpaşa in 2007. Despite scoring twice, the club struggled at the bottom of the league in the 2007–08 season. In July 2009, he moved to England to join Norwich City. His time in England was marked by both highlights, such as scoring on his league debut against Exeter City, and setbacks, including a metatarsal injury in December 2009 and a brief, red-card-marked loan at Millwall in 2011.
The transition from player to manager has seen significant success. After serving as an assistant at several clubs, Askou achieved a domestic double with HB Tórshavn in 2020, earning the Faroe Islands Premier League Manager of the Year award. His managerial reputation grew through stints in Denmark, Sweden, and Scotland, where he led Motherwell to European qualification in his first season. This trajectory has led him to the French Ligue 1, where he joined Toulouse on a three-year contract in May 2026.
