From Sesame Street to Tony Awards: The Versatile Career of Jenna Ushkowitz
In short: Jenna Ushkowitz began her career as a child actor in commercials and on Sesame Street before finding global fame as Tina Cohen-Chang on Glee. Beyond her on-screen success, she has evolved into a prolific Broadway producer, winning two Tony Awards for her work on acclaimed stage productions.
Born in Seoul in 1986 and adopted as an infant, Jenna Ushkowitz grew up in New York, where she built an early foundation in performance through print ads and television commercials. Her professional trajectory shifted significantly when Glee creator Ryan Murphy spent three months scouting Broadway talent, eventually casting her as Tina Cohen-Chang. This role not only earned her a Grammy nomination but also provided a platform for her vocal work, with critics praising her crystalline voice on covers like Cyndi Lauper's True Colors.
Ushkowitz’s influence extends well beyond acting. In 2014, she co-founded Kindred: The Foundation for Adoption to support adoptees and their families, and she later produced the documentary Twinsters, which explored the lives of identical twins separated at birth. Her commitment to advocacy also includes environmental work with Oceana, where she has campaigned against the overfishing of forage fish to protect marine ecosystems like the California sea lion population.
In recent years, Ushkowitz has solidified her status as a powerhouse in the theatre industry. She won Tony Awards as a producer for the 2018 Best Revival of a Musical, Once on This Island, and the 2020 Best Play, The Inheritance. She continues to engage with her Glee roots through podcasts like And That's What You Really Missed, while balancing her professional endeavors with her personal life, including her marriage to David Stanley and their growing family.
