The basketball coach who fought the NCAA and won a multi-million dollar settlement
In short: Known as 'Tark the Shark,' Jerry Tarkanian transformed UNLV into a national powerhouse. But his legacy wasn't just about championship trophies; it was defined by a relentless, decades-long legal war against the NCAA and a revolutionary approach to the game.
Jerry Tarkanian’s coaching philosophy was as distinctive as his habit of chewing on a water-soaked white towel—a nervous tic born from his days coaching in unconditioned high school gyms. At UNLV, he pioneered an 'amoeba defense' that blended man-to-man and zone tactics with a high-speed offense. This style turned the Runnin' Rebels into a spectacle, attracting celebrities like Frank Sinatra to 'Gucci Row' in the arena's special seating during the program's 1973–1992 heyday.
Beyond the court, Tarkanian was a pioneer for players often overlooked by the establishment. He built successful programs at Long Beach State and UNLV using talented players from the junior college circuit, many of whom were considered second-rate by larger programs. He was also a rare coach of his era who dared to field predominantly Black lineups, granting his players the freedom to express themselves.
However, his career was marked by intense friction with the NCAA. Tarkanian accused the organization of targeting his unorthodox teams for investigation and punishment. This led to legendary legal battles: after the NCAA ordered his suspension in 1977, he sued to continue coaching while the case was pending. Though the Supreme Court ruled against him in 1988, his persistence eventually paid off. A 1992 lawsuit resulted in a $2.5 million settlement in 1998.
Tarkanian's personal history was equally profound. Born in 1930 to Armenian immigrants, his mother, Rose, was a survivor of the Armenian genocide. After concluding his illustrious coaching journey at Fresno State, his former university, he joined the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.
