From backup quarterback to interim coordinator: a legacy of selfless leadership
In short: Jerry Neuheisel’s path to coaching wasn't paved by highlight reels, but by the quiet discipline of a backup. After years of supporting others on the field at UCLA, he transitioned from a student-athlete to a strategist, proving that some of the most impactful leaders are forged in the shadows.
Born into a coaching dynasty, Jerry Neuheisel grew up in the shadow of his father, Rick Neuheisel, who served as a position coach and later head coach at UCLA. Despite being a three-star recruit, Jerry’s path was defined by patience. During his freshman year at UCLA in 2012, he saw no game action, serving instead as a scout team quarterback. It wasn't until 2013 that he stepped onto the field as a backup to Brett Hundley.
Neuheisel’s defining moment came in 2014 when an injury forced him into the spotlight against Texas. He led a comeback win, finishing with 178 passing yards and two touchdowns—a performance so impactful his teammates carried him off the field. Yet, even when he faced a high-profile competition for the starting job in 2015 against five-star recruit Josh Rosen, Neuheisel chose to be 'selfless.' He stepped aside gracefully, earning praise from head coach Jim Mora as the epitome of a student-athlete.
His career took an international turn in 2016 when he played for the Obic Seagulls in Japan’s X-League, where he threw for 1,456 yards and 12 touchdowns. He returned to coaching at UCLA in 2018, rising through the ranks from graduate assistant to wide receivers coach. In a dramatic turn of events in late 2025, Neuheisel was named interim offensive coordinator following a poor start to the season. After leading a stunning 42–37 upset over top-ranked Penn State, he experienced his own 'Gatorade bath' moment before eventually joining Northwestern as their quarterbacks coach in 2026.
