The overlooked legend who conquered the NFL from the backup bench
In short: Jim Plunkett achieved what few quarterbacks ever do: leading two different franchises to Super Bowl glory. Yet, despite two rings as a starter and a Heisman Trophy, he remains absent from the Pro Football Hall of Fame, standing alongside only one other legendary winner.
Born in 1947 to Mexican-American parents in a family facing financial hardship, Plunkett’s path to football stardom was forged through intense discipline. After a thyroid operation threatened his career at Stanford, he famously practiced throwing 500 to 1,000 passes daily to refine his arm. This dedication led to a historic 1970 season, where he became the first Latino to win the Heisman Trophy, guiding the Stanford Indians to a landmark Rose Bowl victory over Ohio State.
His professional journey was a saga of resilience. Selected first overall in the 1971 NFL draft by the Boston Patriots, Plunkett faced a series of injuries and trades, including a stint with the San Francisco 49ers. By 1978, he joined the Oakland Raiders, initially serving as a reserve. However, when starter Dan Pastorini suffered a broken leg in 1980, the 32-year-old Plunkett stepped in, leading the Raiders to a Super Bowl XV victory and earning Super Bowl MVP honors.
Plunkett’s career is defined by remarkable versatility and historical firsts. He became the first minority quarterback to lead a team to a Super Bowl title and the only Latino to earn Super Bowl MVP. In 1983, he achieved the rare feat of winning a second Super Bowl (Super Bowl XVIII) with the relocated Los Angeles Raiders. Despite a career spanning 16 seasons and accumulating 25,882 passing yards, he remains one of the few elite, multi-title starting quarterbacks not yet inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
