How an offensive mastermind became a coaching outlier in college football
In short: Jim McElwain built championship-caliber offenses at Alabama and Colorado State, yet his tenure at Florida ended abruptly after just 34 games. From coaching Heisman winner Tim Tebow to navigating sudden death threats, his career highlights the volatile intersection of high-stakes coaching and university administration.
While serving as Alabama's offensive coordinator between 2008 and 2011, McElwain established himself as a premier offensive strategist. In 2009, his offense dominated the nation's top-ranked defense, outrushing the Florida Gators 251 yards to 88 yards. Such tactical prowess guided the Crimson Tide to an undefeated 12–0 regular season and a win in the 2010 BCS National Championship Game. He later repeated this success at Colorado State, where his 2014 offense ranked 13th nationally in yards per game. While coaching at Colorado State, he earned the 2014 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year award.
However, his transition to head coaching at the University of Florida in 2015 was marked by significant friction. While he achieved an SEC Eastern Division championship in his first year, the program's offense actually regressed under his leadership, falling from 96th in total offense under his predecessor to 111th, 116th, and 112th during his tenure. This lack of offensive improvement, combined with a strained relationship with the administration, created an unstable environment. Despite these struggles, he managed to secure an SEC Eastern Division title in his first season. His coaching career also included a brief stint in the NFL as a quarterback coach for the Oakland Raiders.
The situation reached a breaking point in October 2017. Following reports of death threats against McElwain and his players, university officials considered firing him for cause, specifically because he had not disclosed the threats to the administration. Ultimately, the two parties reached a mutual agreement to part ways. His 34-game stint in Gainesville remains one of the shortest tenures for a non-interim head coach in over 80 years. The controversy surrounding the threats led to a sudden departure from the program. This exit occurred after he met with school officials to discuss the ongoing tension.
