From radio provocateur to thoroughbred owner: the polarizing evolution of Jim Rome
In short: Known for high-stakes confrontations and a signature brand of sports commentary, Jim Rome has built a career on pushing boundaries. From on-air altercations with professional athletes to high-stakes investments in championship thoroughbreds, his journey from a local radio host to a nationally syndicated media figure is defined by much more than just controversy.
Jim Rome’s media career is marked by moments that blurred the line between sports commentary and genuine conflict. In 1994, while hosting the show Talk2 on ESPN2, Rome faced a physical confrontation with NFL quarterback Jim Everett. Rome had repeatedly referred to the New Orleans Saints player as "Chris"—a jab at female tennis star Chris Evert—to question his toughness. The tension culminated when Everett, appearing as a guest, overturned a table and shoved Rome to the floor during the live broadcast. While Rome later described the incident as a significant professional mistake, it cemented his reputation as a provocateur.
His penchant for challenging sports legends extended to a 1997 controversy involving hockey icon Gordie Howe. When Howe attempted a comeback with the Detroit Vipers at age 69, Rome offered a $3,000 bounty to any player who would "pummel this old fool back to reality." The bounty eventually reached at least $5,071 before Rome clarified the offer was merely a joke. Even high-ranking officials were not immune; in 2012, NBA Commissioner David Stern famously rebuked Rome for asking if the NBA draft lottery was "fixed."
Beyond the microphone, Rome has found significant success in the world of horse racing. Transitioning from a critic of the sport to a dedicated owner through Jungle Racing, LLC, he has seen substantial returns. His investment in the filly Mizdirection, which he co-owned for $50,000 in 2010, proved highly lucrative. The mare won 11 of 17 starts, earning over $1.7 million before being sold for $2.7 million in 2014. Rome also saw success with the Eclipse Award winner Shared Belief, a gelding that earned over $2 million and defeated the 2014 Kentucky Derby winner, California Chrome.
