How a wide receiver became the architect of a balanced offense
In short: Joe Brady’s coaching philosophy, dubbed "Everybody Eats," transformed the Buffalo Bills from a one-dimensional passing team into a balanced offensive powerhouse. By diversifying the way his team scored, Brady helped lead them to a league-record 13 offensive touchdowns in a single season.
Joe Brady's ascent in the NFL is a study in rapid promotion and tactical evolution. After a successful stint as a wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator for the LSU Tigers in 2019—where he won the Broyles Award for best assistant coach—Brady moved into the professional ranks. He served as an offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers before finding his footing with the Buffalo Bills in early 2022 as their quarterbacks coach.
The turning point for Brady's career came in late 2023. Following a 5–5 start to the season, the Bills promoted him to interim offensive coordinator. His primary task was to move away from a heavy reliance on passing with quarterback Josh Allen and wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Instead, he implemented a strategy that prioritized a more balanced attack, giving more opportunities to running backs James Cook and Ty Johnson while allowing Allen more freedom to run the ball.
This shift proved highly effective. Under Brady's guidance, the Bills won six of their final seven games that year to finish 11–6. By the 2024 season, he refined this philosophy into his "Everybody Eats" strategy. This approach resulted in a league-record 13 offensive players scoring receiving touchdowns during a 13–4 season that saw the team reach the AFC Championship Game. His success culminated in a promotion to head coach in January 2026.
Brady's background as a four-year letterwinner at William & Mary and his education from Penn State provided the foundation for this analytical approach to the game. His career highlights include coaching Joe Burrow during his Heisman Trophy win and navigating the complexities of NFL offensive schemes to achieve consistent winning records.
