How the Buffalo Bills defied expectations to dominate the 2024 NFL season
In short: After losing star receiver Stefon Diggs and releasing several veteran leaders, many analysts predicted a regression for the Buffalo Bills. Instead, the team achieved a 13–4 record, secured their fifth consecutive AFC East title, and set a new franchise record by scoring 525 points throughout the regular season.
The 2024 season marked a significant transition for the Buffalo Bills, who entered the year without key contributors like Stefon Diggs, Mitch Morse, and Jordan Poyer. Facing widespread skepticism regarding their roster turnover, the team adopted an offensive philosophy dubbed Everybody Eats. This strategy emphasized distributing the ball among a diverse group of wide receivers, running backs, and tight ends, preventing opposing defenses from focusing solely on superstar quarterback Josh Allen. The effectiveness of this approach was historic, as 13 different players recorded at least one receiving touchdown, tying an NFL record.
The team's performance was defined by both individual brilliance and collective resilience. Josh Allen, who was named the NFL Most Valuable Player, became the first quarterback in league history to score passing, receiving, and rushing touchdowns in a single game. His leadership helped the Bills secure their sixth consecutive playoff appearance and a number two seed in the AFC. Notably, the team went undefeated at home for the first time since 1990, drawing an average home attendance of 70,696, a 9.8% increase from the previous year.
The season was punctuated by high-stakes victories, including a Week 11 win over the previously undefeated Kansas City Chiefs, which was the highest-rated football game of the 2024 season with 31.2 million viewers. While the Bills ultimately fell to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship, the campaign established several new benchmarks. Beyond their record-breaking point total, the team clinched their division faster than any NFL squad since 2009. This season proved that the Bills could sustain elite performance despite significant personnel changes, cementing their status as a consistent powerhouse in the AFC.
