How a coaching career defined by dominance was haunted by a single rivalry
In short: John Cooper amassed 192 victories and shared three Big Ten titles at Ohio State, yet his legacy remains tied to a recurring nightmare. Despite coaching legendary talent to the Rose Bowl, he struggled to overcome a specific opponent, proving that even the most successful leaders face persistent, inexplicable obstacles.
John Cooper's tenure at Ohio State from 1988 to 2000 was a period of significant achievement and intense scrutiny. He secured 111 victories, the second-highest total in the program's history, trailing only Woody Hayes's 205. His rosters were talent powerhouses, producing NFL stars like Heisman winner Eddie George in 1995 and Outland Trophy winner Orlando Pace in 1996. Cooper also achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first coach to win the Rose Bowl with both a Pac-10 and a Big Ten team.
However, his success was frequently undermined by a difficult relationship with the University of Michigan. Cooper holds a 2–10–1 record against the Wolverines, with several losses occurring under devastating circumstances. In 1993, an undefeated, #5 ranked Buckeyes squad was shut out 28–0 by an unranked Michigan team, a loss that cost them a Rose Bowl berth. In 1995, a #2 ranked Ohio State fell 31–23 to Michigan, and in 1996, a #2 ranked team lost 13–9 after a strong first-half shutout, a result that cost them a national championship opportunity.
This pattern of high-stakes upsets eventually contributed to his departure. After a 6–6 season in 1999, his final year, Cooper was dismissed following a 38–26 loss to Michigan. He was the first non-interim Buckeye head coach to leave the program without winning an outright Big Ten title since Wes Fesler. Today, Cooper remains a prominent figure in football, serving as a scouting consultant for the Cincinnati Bengals and an analyst for ESPN.
