The dual-sport star who mastered the gridiron and the green
In short: He was a first-round NFL draft pick and a professional golfer. John Brodie achieved elite status in two vastly different arenas, yet a single realization about the pressure of professional competition forced him to choose just one path.
John Brodie’s athletic journey began at Stanford University, where he was a consensus All-American in 1956. Despite his talent, he played as a walk-on to balance his commitments to the Stanford golf team. This dual identity eventually reached a breaking point; after experiencing the intense pressure of the PGA Tour, Brodie realized he could not do justice to both sports professionally.
In the NFL, Brodie became a cornerstone of the San Francisco 49ers for 17 seasons. After the trade of legendary quarterback Y.A. Tittle, Brodie took over as the primary starter in 1962. His career was marked by significant milestones, including a 1970 season where he was named the NFL Most Valuable Player. During that season, he guided the 49ers to a 10–3–1 tally and their inaugural post-season berth in 13 years, topping the league for completions and passing touchdowns.
Brodie's career was not without turbulence. He faced a significant arm injury following a car accident in 1963 and later became a prominent, though eventually distanced, figure in the Church of Scientology. He joined the organization after seeking relief for arm tendinitis in 1969. Despite his later disavowal of the church due to the treatment of its members, he remained a notable figure in the Bay Area sports landscape until his death in 2026.
Beyond the field, Brodie was a successful broadcaster for NBC Sports, calling major events like Super Bowl XIII. He eventually returned to his first passion, competing on the Senior PGA Tour from 1985 to 1998, where he secured one victory and twelve top-ten finishes.
