In short: He invented a move now used by superstars like Randy Orton, but his legacy is defined by more than just the 'Ace Crusher.' From a decorated tag team champion in Japan to a controversial WWE executive, John Laurinaitis lived a life of high-stakes ring drama and backstage power plays.

Born in Philadelphia in 1962, John Laurinaitis began his wrestling career in 1986 under the name Johnny Ace. While he found significant success in Japan's All Japan Pro Wrestling—winning titles such as the All Asia Tag Team Championship and the New Year's Heavyweight Battle Royal in 1991—he is perhaps most famous for his technical contribution to the sport: the 'Ace Crusher,' a precursor to the modern 'cutter' maneuver. He was part of a wrestling family, with his brothers Joe and Marcus also competing in the ring. James, his nephew, gained notoriety playing linebacker for the St. Louis Rams alongside the New Orleans Saints.

His career later transitioned from the ring to the corporate office. After the acquisition of WCW assets in 2001, Laurinaitim ascended through the ranks of WWE, serving as Director of Talent Relations and eventually Executive Vice President. During this era, he also appeared on television as an on-screen authority figure, often playing a 'corporate stooge' or an antagonistic interim General Manager, a role that famously drew the ire of stars like CM Punk. His time as a performer on television included a notable match against Theodore Long in 2012. He also famously used the slogan 'People Power' during his tenure as an interim manager.

However, his professional trajectory was shadowed by significant controversy. A 2022 Wall Street Journal report linked his 2012 demotion to a $1.5 million non-disclosure agreement involving allegations of misconduct. More recently, in 2024, Laurinaitis became embroiled in legal proceedings following a lawsuit by Janel Grant, which included allegations of sexual trafficking. In response, Laurinaitis released a statement through his attorney accusing Vince McMahon of using dictatorial sexual demands to maintain control over him. The company officially ended his twenty-one-year tenure in August 2022. This followed a period where he had been re-hired as the Head of Talent Relations in March 2021.
