In short: Jeff Brohm’s path to becoming a college football head coach was anything but linear. A multi-sport athlete who flirted with professional baseball, Brohm navigated a decade of injuries, XFL stardom, and a nomadic coaching career before finding his rhythm as a leader of programs at Western Kentucky, Purdue, and Louisville.

Born in Louisville in 1971, Jeff Brohm was a standout athlete who excelled at Trinity High School. His early career was defined by a tug-of-war between football and baseball. Despite being drafted by the Montreal Expos in 1989 and the Cleveland Indians in 1990, Brohm eventually committed to football at the University of Louisville. His college playing career was marked by resilience; he returned from a fractured ankle in 1991 and later overcame a broken index finger in 1993 to lead the Cardinals to a Liberty Bowl victory.

After going undrafted in the 1994 NFL draft, Brohm spent seven seasons in the NFL with six different teams, including the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos. His professional journey also included a stint in the XFL with the Orlando Rage in 2001. Brohm embraced the league's unique culture, famously justifying his quick return to the field after a brutal hit by noting he still had a pulse. A shoulder injury in 2001 ultimately ended his playing career, prompting his transition into coaching.

Brohm’s coaching career began in the arena leagues before he climbed the ranks as an assistant at Louisville, Florida Atlantic, Illinois, and UAB. His breakthrough as a head coach came at Western Kentucky in 2014, where he led the Hilltoppers to consecutive bowl wins and a Conference USA championship in 2015. After a successful tenure at Purdue, where he achieved bowl eligibility in his first season, Brohm returned to his alma mater, the University of Louisville, as head coach in 2022. His career reflects a persistent ability to adapt, whether managing quarterback transitions or building programs through local recruiting.
