The undefeated sumo star who traded the ring for professional wrestling
In short: Before becoming a household name in the WWF, John Tenta achieved something nearly impossible: an unblemished record in professional sumo. Despite his rapid rise and 24 consecutive victories, the physical toll and cultural clashes of the sport forced him to abandon his path toward greatness.
Born in Surrey, British Columbia, John Tenta was a natural athlete who grew up inspired by wrestlers like Gene Kiniski. After winning a Canadian junior championship in 1981 and competing at the World Junior Wrestling Championships, he attended Louisiana State University. While at LSU, he was known as "Big John" and competed in both wrestling and football, though LSU dropped varsity wrestling in 1985 due to Title IX compliance.
Tenta's most remarkable feat occurred in Japan. Entering the sumo world at age 22—later than many traditional aspirants—he utilized his 423-pound frame and wrestling background to dominate. Known as Kototenzan Toshimitsu, he won all 24 of his bouts during an eight-month career, including 21 consecutive wins from the bottom division. However, the physical abuse of the hard ring and a large tiger tattoo on his biceps—which would have required a skin graft to meet professional standards—led him to quit the sport.
Transitioning to professional wrestling, Tenta achieved global fame in the World Wrestling Federation as the monster heel Earthquake. He became a centerpiece of major storylines, including a high-profile feud with Hulk Hogan in 1990 that involved a scripted injury to Hogan's ribs. He also formed the successful tag team The Natural Disasters with his friend Typhoon, eventually winning the WWF Tag Team Championship. Tenta passed away in 2006 after a battle with bladder cancer.
