From record-breaking teenager to international star: the resilient career of John Souttar
In short: At just 16 years and 99 days old, John Souttar became the youngest player to debut for Dundee United. Since that historic moment in 2013, his journey through professional football has been defined by tactical versatility and a relentless battle against significant physical injuries.
Born in Aberdeen on 25 September 1996, Souttar's footballing lineage is evident; his father, Jack, was a professional for Brechin City. Souttar’s early career was marked by rapid progression, moving through the Dundee United youth system to become their youngest-ever first-team player in January 2013. His talent was evident early on, attracting a £600,000 bid from Sunderland in October 2013, though he ultimately chose to stay in Scotland.
A central defender by trade, Souttar has demonstrated remarkable adaptability. During his time at Dundee United, he experimented with defensive midfield and right-back roles, though he eventually returned to his natural centre-back position while playing for Heart of Midlothian. His international career with Scotland began in September 2018, following years of representing the nation at the under-17, under-19, and under-21 levels.
However, his ascent has not been without hardship. Souttar has faced a series of grueling setbacks, including a ruptured Achilles tendon in January 2017 and another injury to the same tendon in February 2020. He also endured a significant hip injury during his international tenure. Despite these physical challenges, he achieved success with Rangers, scoring in an Old Firm derby against Celtic in May 2023, and has remained a vital part of the Scotland national setup.
His resilience is perhaps best highlighted by his continued selection for major tournaments. After being omitted from the Euro 2024 squad, he earned player-of-the-match honors against Portugal and was selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
