From a $6,000 bonus to the New York Yankees roster
In short: In 2016, John Schreiber was a 15th-round draft pick with a modest $6,000 signing bonus. Today, he is a Major League pitcher navigating the high-stakes world of professional relief, having pitched for the Tigers, Red Sox, and Royals.
Born in Wyandotte, Michigan, in 1994, Schreiber’s path to the majors was defined by steady climbs through the minor leagues. After attending Carlson High School and playing two seasons each at Henry Ford Community College and the University of Northwestern Ohio, he made history in 2014. While playing for the Kalamazoo Growlers in the Northwoods League, he became the first alumnus of the team to reach the Major Leagues.
Schreiber’s professional ascent began when the Detroit Tigers selected him in the 15th round of the 2016 MLB draft. His journey through the Tigers' system saw significant statistical milestones, including a dominant 2017 season with the West Michigan Whitecaps, where he posted a 0.54 ERA and held opponents to a .147 batting average. By 2019, his performance in Double-A Erie earned him a promotion to the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens, and eventually, a call-up to the big leagues on August 8, 2019.
His career has been marked by resilience through injury and roster shifts. After a stint with the Boston Red Sox, where he became a key bullpen piece in 2022 with a 2.22 ERA, he faced a right teres major strain in 2023. Following a trade to the Kansas City Royals in February 2024, Schreiber eventually found himself claimed off waivers by the New York Yankees on August 31, 2026, assuming the remainder of his $3.75 million contract.
