The hero who had to die to become a legend
In short: In a medium where heroes usually win, Jonathan Joestar was designed to lose. To create a legacy that spanned generations, his creator had to make a radical choice: kill the protagonist. This sacrifice turned a 'boring' hero into a foundational symbol of purity and spirit.
Hirohiko Araki, the creator of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, intentionally designed Jonathan Joestar as a 'fundamentally virtuous' symbol of dignity rather than a unique, complex individual. Because of the weekly manga format, Jonathan initially suffered a 'negative' growth curve, losing repeatedly to his rival, Dio Brando. This led to early criticism from readers who found him bland or unlikable compared to the more intelligent and cocky protagonists who followed him.
To ensure the story could move beyond a single life, Araki made the controversial decision to kill Jonathan. He viewed death as the ultimate 'negative' for a hero, but argued it was necessary to pass the Joestar lineage and 'spirit' to the next generation. This creative choice was heavily influenced by Araki's reflections on his grandfather's death and literary works like 'Roots' and 'East of Eden,' which explore how legacies are passed down through descendants.
Jonathan's influence remains the series' backbone. Though he dies in the first arc, his 'Spirit' and biological lineage appear in every subsequent part. He is revealed to be the biological father of Giorno Giovanna in 'Golden Wind,' and his bones serve as a fail-safe in 'Stone Ocean.' Even in a rebooted universe, his character is reimagined as a horse racing prodigy, proving that his role as a sacrificial ancestor is the core mechanic of the franchise's mythology.
