From the Congo to a record-breaking NBA championship at 19
In short: Jonathan Kuminga’s ascent to the NBA is a masterclass in rapid development. By bypassing college to enter the professional ranks, he became one of the youngest champions in league history, eventually breaking franchise records for efficiency and making history for the Atlanta Hawks.
Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kuminga began playing basketball at just two years old. He moved to the United States in 2016 at age 14 to pursue high school basketball. His trajectory was meteoric; as a sophomore, he was named MaxPreps National Sophomore of the Year after averaging 25 points per game and scoring a record 40 points in a single showcase game against Gonzaga College High School.
Kuminga chose a high-risk, high-reward path by reclassifying to the 2020 class and bypassing college offers from programs like Duke and Kentucky. He joined the NBA G League Ignite as a developmental prospect before being selected 7th overall by the Golden State Warriors in 2021. This move paid off immediately: by 2022, he secured an NBA championship, becoming the second-youngest champion in league history at 19 years and 253 days.
His career is defined by moments of extreme statistical outliers. In 2024, he tied a Warriors franchise record by scoring 25 points on a perfect 11-for-11 shooting night. After a lucrative extension and a trade to the Atlanta Hawks in 2026, he made history again by becoming the first player in Hawks franchise history to score 25+ points in less than 30 minutes during a debut. He eventually joined the Minnesota Timberwolves in late 2026.
Beyond the court, Kuminga represents a global basketball lineage. He plays alongside his brother, Joel Ntambwe, on the DR Congo national team. While he is a mainstay in the NBA, he continues to learn English as a second language, maintaining his roots as a native French speaker from the Congo.
