In short: Josh Naylor is a statistical anomaly. Despite being one of the slowest runners in Major League Baseball, he became only the fourth first baseman in history to record at least 20 home runs and 30 stolen bases during a single season, a feat achieved during the 2025 campaign.

Born in Burlington, Ontario, on June 22, 1997, Naylor has become a central figure in Canadian baseball history. His journey from a 12-year-old playing with teenagers in the Ontario Blue Jays to a Major League All-Star is marked by both extraordinary talent and unexpected moments. In 2014, he became the first Canadian to participate in the MLB Junior Select Home Run Derby, finishing second behind Luken Baker.

His professional career has been a whirlwind of movement and historic feats. After being selected 12th overall by the Miami Marlins in the 2015 MLB draft, he has since played for the San Diego Padres, Cleveland Guardians, Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Seattle Mariners. He has achieved unique milestones, such as becoming the first player in MLB history to record eight RBIs from the eighth inning onward in a single game, a feat achieved in May 2022 against the Chicago White Sox.

Naylor's impact extends to the international stage, where he has represented the Canada national team in the 2017, 2023, and 2026 World Baseball Classics, serving as captain in 2026. His dominance in Canadian baseball was recognized with the Tip O'Neill Award in both 2023 and 2025. He achieved a historic feat during the 2025 postseason, turning into the first player born in Canada to smash a postseason home run against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Beyond the stats, Naylor's resilience is notable. After a severe ankle injury in 2021, he underwent surgery and relied on his mother throwing balled-up socks to maintain his hand-eye coordination during rehabilitation. He has since transitioned from a high-prospect outfielder to a powerful first baseman, proving his versatility across multiple positions in the Major Leagues.
