The modern center-back is no longer just a wall, but a playmaker
In short: Modern football demands defenders who do more than block shots; they must initiate attacks. Josip Šutalo embodies this shift toward ball-progressing center-backs. Known for his composure and precise distribution, he excels at breaking lines with progressive passing while maintaining a proactive defensive stance under intense pressure from elite opponents.
Born in Čapljina and developed through the Dinamo Zagreb academy, Josip Šutalo represents a new archetype of defender. Unlike traditional center-backs who prioritize physical clearance, Šutalo is defined by his composure in possession and distribution. Analysts highlight his ability to break opposition lines with progressive passing and his capacity for ball-carrying into open spaces under pressure. He first joined Dinamo Zagreb's youth system in July 2014. Before that, he played for NK Neretva in Metković. He also spent time on loan with Istra 1961 during the 2020–21 season.
His tactical evolution reached a peak during the 2024–25 season at Ajax. Under head coach Francesco Farioli, Šutalo became a core component of a structured system that emphasized collective coverage. This environment allowed him to refine his proactive anticipation for interceptions and blocks. His form improved so significantly that he was named to the Eredivisie Team of the Month twice—in September 2024 and April 2025. He signed a five-year deal with Ajax in August 2023 for €20.5 million. He captained his side during his very first appearance for the Dutch club. By the end of three seasons, he reached 108 total appearances.
Šutalo's international trajectory mirrors this steady rise. After debuting for Croatia in June 2022, he became a reliable fixture in high-stakes tournaments. He played full matches in the 2022 FIFA World Cup third-place play-off against Morocco and featured prominently in the 2023 UEFA Nations League Finals. Now on loan at Lazio, his career serves as a blueprint for how technical proficiency is becoming the primary currency of modern defensive tactics. He was selected for both Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup. In August 2026, he joined Lazio on a season-long loan. He is noted as being right-footed.
