The meteoric rise of a defensive midfield anchor
In short: From a promising youth prospect in Austria to a €40 million star in Spain, Morten Hjulmand’s career has been defined by rapid progression. His journey through the European leagues showcases a rare ability to command the pitch, leading clubs to titles and breaking records as a captain.
Born in Kastrup, Denmark, in 1999, Hjulmand’s professional ascent began in earnest when he moved to Austria's Admira Wacker in May 2018. After a period of establishing himself in the Austrian Bundesliga, his performances earned him a move to Italy's Lecce in January 2021 for a fee of €170,000. In Italy, he became a central figure, eventually making history at just 23 years old when he became the youngest captain in the history of Serie A.
His time in the Italian top flight was marked by incredible physical output; under manager Marco Baroni, Hjullarnd led the league in ball recoveries and averaged over 10 kilometers covered per match. This defensive dominance and leadership helped Lecce avoid relegation during a challenging season. His ability to anchor a midfield caught the attention of Portugal's Sporting CP, who secured his services in August 2023 for an initial €18 million, a figure that could have reached €21 million through add-ons.
At Sporting, Hjulmand transitioned from a defensive specialist to a more complete player. Manager Ruben Amorim noted that his technical and tactical versatility made him a more well-rounded option than predecessors like Manuel Ugarte. His tenure in Portugal was highly decorated, including winning the 2023–24 Primeira Liga title and earning a spot in the league's Best XI. By July 2026, his trajectory reached a new peak with a reported €40 million transfer to Atlético Madrid, a five-year deal that keeps him in La Liga until 2031.
