Why Alessandro Bastoni is redefining the modern centre-back role in professional football
In short: Alessandro Bastoni has evolved from a traditional defender into a dynamic playmaker. Known for his passing range and overlapping runs, the Italian international has become a cornerstone of Inter Milan and his national team, blending defensive solidity with the creative instincts of a midfielder in a modern back-three system.
Born in Casalmaggiore in 1999, Alessandro Bastoni began his footballing journey at the youth academy of Atalanta at age seven. His professional progression was rapid; he made his Serie A debut in January 2017. By August 2017, Inter Milan secured his signature for 31 million euros, marking the start of a career that would see him become one of the most highly regarded defenders in world football.
Bastoni is defined by his tactical versatility. While he began as a full-back, he transitioned into a central defender, frequently operating on the left side of a three-man backline under manager Simone Inzaghi. Unlike traditional stoppers, Bastoni is encouraged to roam forward, often making overlapping runs to link up with wing-backs like Federico Dimarco. His ability to deliver bending crosses and execute accurate long-range passes has made him a significant creative asset, drawing comparisons to legendary ball-playing defenders like Leonardo Bonucci.
His international career has been equally distinguished. A key member of the Italy squad that triumphed at UEFA Euro 2020, Bastoni has consistently earned individual accolades, including multiple selections for the Serie A Team of the Year. Despite his on-pitch success, his career has faced scrutiny; in July 2026, he was subject to an investigation by the Guardia di Finanza regarding alleged involvement with a high-end escort service. Nevertheless, his influence on the pitch remains undeniable, as evidenced by his 300th appearance for Inter Milan in August 2026.
Today, Bastoni is valued not just for his defensive timing and calmness under pressure, but for his unique role as an auxiliary playmaker. Whether playing in the middle of a back-three or shifting to a back-four, his capacity to exploit space and contribute to the attack makes him a quintessential modern defender, constantly challenging the conventional boundaries of his position.
