In short: Joy Jorgensen mastered the art of narrative before she ever stepped behind a camera. After finding fame as a television actress, she pivoted to become a powerhouse producer and director, building an award-winning portfolio that spans from Sundance hits to international festival prizes.

Jorgensen’s trajectory is defined by a transition from performance to production. She first gained public recognition in Los Angeles at age 12 as Joy Lauren, eventually becoming a staple of the ABC comedy-drama Desperate Housewives. Her role as Danielle Van de Kamp earned her three consecutive Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble between 2006 and 2008.

Despite her early success in front of the camera, Jorgensen pursued rigorous academic training to refine her craft behind it. After completing an American history degree at Columbia University during 2012, she obtained a Master's in Screenwriting and Directing from New York University Tisch School of the Arts. This foundation paved the way for the launch of Killjoy Films, which she founded in New York in 2014 and later moved to Berlin in 2016.

As a producer, Jorgensen has curated a string of critical successes. Notable short films within her portfolio comprise Bambirak (the 2021 Sundance Short Film Jury Award recipient) and Laps (which won the Special Jury Award at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival). The Seattle International Film Festival awarded the Grand Jury Prize for New American Cinema to We Strangers, a production she oversaw in 2024.

Her influence is recognized by major institutions. She has held prestigious positions as a Sundance and Rotterdam Producing Fellow, a Torino Film Lab Script Editing Fellow, and a 2024 Ingmar Bergman Estate Foundation Resident. These accolades underscore her shift from being a face of television to a primary architect of independent cinema.
